Finned Vs. Bare Pipe Tank Coils

Bare Pipe Tank Coils:
- Bare coils are ideal for heating highly viscous products, especially in cases where fouling could be a concern.
- Stainless steel bare tank coils are suitable for use in food, beverage, and other sanitary industries.
- For lighter heating duties, bare pipe coils typically offer a more cost-effective solution.
Finned Tank Coils:
- Finned coils are highly efficient, providing up to 12 times more surface area than bare pipe coils.
- The increased surface area leads to better heat transfer, meaning less pipe is needed to heat the tank—saving both time and money on installation.
- Finned tank coils are particularly efficient for larger heating duties, where their enhanced performance really shines.
Installation Orientation:
Both helically wound and longitudinal finned coils offer excellent heat transfer and efficiency. The difference lies in installation orientation, driven by product behavior, flow characteristics, and coking potential:
- Helically wound coils are best for horizontal installations
- Longitudinal finned coils are preferred for vertical installations
