In certain situations, a typical shell and tube heat exchanger is too large or doesn’t support the type or volume of product you need heated or cooled. In these situations, a compact shell and tube heat exchanger can offer a tremendous advantage.

High Heat Transfer Capabilities for Low Product Flow Rates

Accommodating lower product flow rates up to 10 gallons per minute isn’t always easy. With larger shell and tube heat exchangers, low flow rates are often associated with bypass issues and slowed tube velocities, which hurt heat transfer efficiency.

The smaller tubes in our compact heat exchangers encourage greater turbulence and tubeside velocity, which translates to an excellent heat transfer rate. The reduced tube diameter also gives the product in the tubes more contact with the tube surface area, providing greater heat transfer from the heating or cooling medium to the product.

Compact heat exchangers are ideal for small batch processes, point-of-use streams, research and development and pilot scale applications. These smaller shell and tube heat exchangers are often incorporated into air conditioning and heating systems, or used as a means to capture wasted heat within a larger process.

Compact Heat Exchanger Configuration Options

Like Enerquip’s larger shell and tube heat exchangers, our compact models come in a variety of configurations. Straight-tube designs are simple to clean because water or other sanitizing fluids, as well as cleaning equipment, can easily reach all surface areas of the tubes. Straight-tube configurations are versatile, able to adjust to various single-pass and multi-pass flow patterns.

U-tube designs also have their own benefits. The risk of damage due to thermal expansion is lowered because the tube bundle is only attached to a single tubesheet. Additionally, while cleaning may be trickier due to the U-bends, the bundle is generally easier to remove for sanitizing or replacing.

To accommodate processing needs in a variety of industries and settings, Enerquip’s compact shell and tube heat exchangers are built to ASME standards, and each unit is code stamped, so that you can be assured that it will operate safely at pressures and temperatures found in more challenging conditions.

For applications in the brewing, food, beverage and dairy industries, or any others that require sanitary process equipment, our stainless steel compact shell and tube heat exchangers are easy to clean and sanitize and come with standard sanitary tri-clamp ferrule connections, and food-grade EPDM O-Rings.

Enerquip’s pharmaceutical grade compact heat exchangers are also more compliant with ASME-BPE standards than other low-flow coil designs and similar compact models in the market. These are designed with double tubesheets for prevention of cross-contamination, have 316L stainless steel electro-polished tubes and have sanitary tri-clamp ferrule connections and EPDM Class VI O-Rings.

Compact shell and tube heat exchangers can be fabricated using a number of metals and alloys. Enerquip uses stainless steels and higher alloys to ensure the equipment is long-lasting, durable, resistant to fouling and corrosion, and sanitary for pharmaceutical, food and beverage, dairy and other applications. We don’t use carbon steel in our equipment, which eliminates the potential for cross-contamination between materials of choice – since carbon steel can make stainless steel rust.
